Ancient greek Interiors

The beginning of western ideas and culture was started in Ancient Greece. The people of ancient Greece are remembered as masters of philosophy, science, fine arts, geography, medicine, and astronomy. many great products in architecture and design were the outcome of people's intelligence and hunger for learning in the greek culture. The Parthenon is one of the most iconic pieces of architecture of ancient Greece.

An ancient temple of the goddess Athena. This temple is located on Athenian Acropolis and is one of the most important surviving buildings that give us a good look into Ancient Greece and its design.  The Parthenon looks like the epitome of architectural perfection, but what I found so interesting is that even though it appears to be perfect, the columns are not symmetrical and balanced in reality. The distance between the column is slightly different, the columns in the corner are heavier, and the columns bow slightly inward. the cumulation of the Doric order can be seen in The Parthenon. Doric columns are more masculine in look and stature. It is one of the three classical orders in the Ancient Greek period; it features vertical grooves running down the column and a smooth capital that flared away from the column to meet the top.

Another signature of Greek interior design was their motifs. The Greek Key is One of the most well-known Greek motifs, this motif was used frequently in ancient Greek and is still used today.

Ancient Greece had ample forests to supply the population with maple, oak, beech, willow and citrus trees for furniture-making and home interiors. But floors were typically pounded earth or plaster in poorer dwellings. Well-to-do Athenians had mosaic tile floors, patterned in elaborate scenes -- like those painted on the walls -- or laid out in geometric designs with borders.

Greek homes differed according to climate, and interior walls were often left bare or decorated with a single woven wall hanging. Warmer southern locations tended toward whitewashed clay or stucco-type wall finishes with window openings that could catch Mediterranean breezes. Urban dwellings, in cities such as Athens, would have reflected the wealth of the inhabitants with frescoed walls painted by artists in pleasing arrangements of pastel earth tones and in opulent deep reds and blacks.

Traditional Greek interior decor encompasses natural stone flooring, especially marble or limestone to create a warm look in tune with nature. Area rugs featuring stripe patterns usually with flowers, trellis and classic motifs are used instead of wall-to-wall carpeting, lending the home a rustic feel.

Greek key, also referred to as meander, is in its most basic form a linear pattern. The design is made up of a long, continuous line that repeatedly folds back on itself, mimicking the ancient Maeander River of Asia Minor with its many twists and turns. Homer mentions the river in “The Iliad,” and it is believed that the meander motif symbolizes infinity or the eternal flow of things.Greek key strikes the right balance of decorative and simple, ancient and modern, masculine and feminine — all at the same time
